Nellie L. Countryman, 84, Rossville, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at the St. Marys Manor.
She was born August 20, 1913, in Rossville, the daughter of Dew¬ey and Florence Higgins Country¬man.
Nellie grew up in Rossville and was graduated from Rossville High School in 1932. Miss Countryman owned and operated the Rossville Variety Store for nearly 40 years. She had worked at the arsenal in Ogden, Utah during World War II, and had done housework in Tope¬ka after graduating high school. She was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church and the women’s group at the church.
Surviving her are four sisters, Irene Wade, Ogden, Utah, Ruby Davis, Topeka, Vena Thompson, Delia, and Betty Barrett, Louisville, Ky.; and one brother, Ralph Countryman, Topeka.
Visitation was at Piper Funer¬al Chapel in Rossville. Her service was at 10:30 Tuesday (this morn¬ing) at the Rossville United Meth¬odist Church. Burial was in the Rossville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rossville United Methodist Church or the Kansas Arthritis Foundation and sent in care of Piper-Verschelden Funer¬al Home, St. Marys.

ROSSVILLE – Nellie L. Countryman, 84, Rossville, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at a St. Marys nursing home.
Miss Countryman owned and operated the Rossville Variety Store for nearly 40 years. She also had worked at the arsenal in Ogden, Utah, during World War II, and she had done house work in Topeka in the 1930s.
She was born Aug. 20, 1913, at Ross¬ville, the daughter of Dewey and Florence Higgins Countryman. She was graduated from Rossville High School in 1932.
Miss Countryman was a member of Rossville United Methodist Church and the Women's Group at the church.
Survivors include four sisters, Irene Wade, Ogden, Ruby Davis, Topeka, Verna Thompson, Delia, and Betty Barrett, Louis¬ville, Ky.; and a brother, Ralph Country¬man, Topeka.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rossville United Methodist Church. Buri¬al will be in Rossville Cemetery. Miss Coun¬tryman will lie in state from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in Rossville, where relatives and friends will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rossville United Methodist Church and I sent in care of the funeral home.

Countryman was born in Rossville, Aug. 29, 1913, and owned and operated the Rossville Variety Store there until her retirement several years ago. |
