MAPLE HILL — Velma Irene Hoobler, 78, Maple Hill, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1994, at her home.
Mrs. Hill was an operator at the Maple Hill Centera and she carried the Topeka newspaper for more than 50 years. She also had worked in the telephone office before she was married. Mrs. Hill was a cook at the Maple Hill Grade School and was a child care provider.
She was born Oct. 22, 1915, in Windom, the daughter of William A. and Nevada Page Leeper. She was reared in Maple Hill and Ellinwood and had lived in Maple Hill Since 1931.
Mrs. Hoobler was a member of Loyal Chapter No. 176 of the Order of the Eastern Star at Silver Lake, the Royal Neighbors Club, Maple Hill Senior Citizen Coffee Club and Rossville United Methodist Church.
She was married to Harold Hoobler on Sept. 17, 1938, in Topeka. He survives.
Other survivors include five sons, William P. Hoobler, Wichita, Kenneth E. Hoobler, St. Marys, Norris A. Hoobler, Topeka, and Horace B. Hoobler and Sidney D. Hoobler, both of Maple Hill; three sisters, Mildred Lemon and Betty Scheufler, both of Ellinwood, and Mable Herl, Great Bend; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A son, Richard Lee Hoobler, died Jan. 6, 1991.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Maple Hill Community Congregational Church. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Hoobler will lie state after 2 p.m. Friday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home where relatives and friends will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday. Contributions may be made to the Velma I. Hoobler Memorial Fund to be designated later and sent in care of the funeral home.
