 | Anniversary- McElvain, Melville and Josephine 1 Mr. and Mrs. McElvain were taken by surprise last Friday evening Mar. 19, when a number of their friends and relatives gathered at their home to celebrate their forty first wedding anniversary. The crowd entered carrying a beautiful rocking chair which they presented to the sur¬prised couple. The evening was pleasantly spent in playing games and music was furnished by Irene Howard and Gladys Eversole. At a late hour light refreshments were served consisting of cake and fruit salad. Mr. McElvain then treated the gentlemen to cigars and the ladies to candy. The invited guests were: Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Howard. Mr. and Mrs. Eversole, Mr. and Mrs. Z. Iteser, Mr. and Mrs. J. K.  | Obituary- McElvain, Alford A.E. McElvain Dies
Alford E. McElvain, 86, of Wamego, died Thursday at an Alma nursing home.
He was born Dec. 2, 1878, at Rossville. He was employed as a telegrapher for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1902. He served as agent and telegrapher at Rossville, St. Marys, Hays, Randolph and Wamego. He retired in 1946 and spent the rest of his life at Wamego.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at St. Marys, Consistory in Topeka, Abdallah Shrine at Leavenworth and the Old Timers Club of Union Pacific Railroad.
He was married to Louise DeMarais at St. Marys in 1905. She died in 1957. He also was preceded in death by a son, Alford McElvain.
Survivors include two daughter, Mrs. Rosemary Klesath, Topeka, and Mrs. Ethel Umscheid, Wamego; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Kuelper, Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego with burial in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery at Wamego. |
