 | Obituary- Reser, Clifford 2 Clifford Reser Killed When Pickup Rolled Backward
from “Topeka Capital-Journal”
Clifford E. Reser, a 78-year- old retired St. Marys farmer, was killed some time Satur¬day afternoon, June 13, 1987, when his pickup truck rolled backward and struck him in the chest, a Shawnee County coroner said.
Reser’s body was discover¬ed by family members about 1:30 a.m. in a field about two miles east of St. Marys across the Pottawatomie-Shawnee county line.
Dr. Robert D. Jensen, Shawnee County deputy dis¬trict coroner, said Reser was last seen alive about 1 p.m. Saturday when he left to do some work on his property. Reser had been using the pickup truck to pull down trees and shrubs and drag them to a ravine to prevent soil erosion, Jensen said.
A rope tied between some
brush and the pickup truck snapped, Jensen said, and Reser apparently left the truck to investigate. The truck was found in neutral gear. It had rolled downhill where it struck Reser in the right chest, Jensen said.
The truck did not roll over Reser, the deputy coroner said.
The blow broke some of Reser’s ribs, which punctured the protective tissue sur¬rounding the lungs, Jensen said. Eventually, the lungs collapsed from a buildup of air.
Jensen estimated that the accident occurred between 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday.
Because a moving motor vehicle was involved, Sgt. Bill Hudson of the Shawnee Coun¬ty Sheriff’s Department said the accident will be regarded as a traffic fatality.
