Charles P. White, 78, better known as “Press” died Saturday, May 5, in a Topeka hospital after a short illness. He was born in Jackson county, Kansas, January 24, 1884, and had lived in Rossville and vicinity most of his life.
Mr. White was a charter member of the Delia Masonic Lodge and was a past master. He served with the Marine Corps during World War I, and had been a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America at Topeka.
Survivors include a daughter, Doris Townsend of South San Francisco, California; a son, Bill and a granddaughter, Sheree Jo White of San Rafael, California; two sisters, Grace White of Rossville, and Mrs. Daisy Rice of Casitos Springs, California; and three brothers, Arthur of South San Francisco, California, James of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Norman of Rossville.
Services were held at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, May 9, at the Rossville Methodist Church, Rev. Don Jones officiating. Mrs. H. D. Richardson and Mrs. Don Jones accompanied by Mrs. Joe Campbell sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden."
The Rossville Masonic Lodge and the American Legion conducted graveside services.
Pallbearers were Earl Mitchell of Delia, and Gerald Larson, Howard French, Jimmie Davis, Leroy Parr and Pete Kovar of Rossville.
Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral services for Charles (Press) White were Mrs. Doris Townsend, So. San Francisco, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Bill White and daughter Shiree [sic] of San Rafael, Calif.; Mr. James White, Waukesha, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. John Martel, Merriam, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cochran, Mrs. Clyde Fisher, Mr. Ross Myers, Ross Jr., Sharon, Dale and Don Myers, Paul Osborn, Gerald Decker, Mrs. Rita Ross, Mrs. Carrie Compton, Sylvia Lukenbill, Mrs. Emma Ausherman, Mr. Lawrence Binney, all of Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wyker, Mayetta; Mrs. Joe Barney, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Banta of Hoyt; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mitchell and Jack Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Miller of Delia; Mrs. Fred Clark, Silver Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Schumaker of St. Marys.
